VIRUS AND ANTIVIRUS

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD ANTIVIRUS MENTIONED BELOW THE POST HACKED VERSION'S

A virus is a computer program which can duplicate itself and 'infect' other computers automatically and can cause file deletion, system corruption and even cause computers to be formatted. With 10 to 15 new viruses discovered per day, the threat is growing exponentially with leading anti virus firm McAfee stating that more than 58,000 virus threats are currently in existence.

Viruses can be spread via any transferable media whether in the form of floppy disks, CDs, email attachments or in material downloaded from the Web. The most common form of transfer is via email, in the form of an attachment which, when opened, activate a virus and infect a computer. Often, viruses are programmed to spread themselves by emailing a copy of themselves to all the other email addresses in an infected computer's address book.

Computer viruses are software programs designed to interfere with computer operation deliberately. They record, corrupt, or delete data. They spread themselves to other computers through local networks and the Internet, often slowing things down and causing other problems as a result.

Just as human viruses range in severity from the 24-hour flu to the Ebola virus, computer viruses range from the mildly annoying to the downright destructive. The good news is that with an ounce of prevention and a little knowledge, you are less likely to fall victim to computer viruses, and you can diminish the impact if you do get one.

How do viruses work?

Basic viruses typically rely on unwary computer users to inadvertently share or send them. Some viruses that are more sophisticated, such as worms, can replicate and send themselves automatically to other computers by controlling other software programs, such as an e-mail sharing application.

Certain viruses, called Trojan horses, can falsely appear as a beneficial program to coax users into downloading them. Some Trojans can even provide expected results while quietly damaging your system or other networked computers at the same time.

Nothing can guarantee the security of your computer 100 percent. However, you can continue to improve your computer's security and decrease the possibility of infection by keeping your system up-to-date, maintaining a current antivirus software subscription, and following a few best practices.

HELP: Because no security method is guaranteed, it's important to back up critical files on a regular basis before you encounter a virus or other problems.

How do YOU know if a virus has infected your computer?

After you open and run an infected program or attachment on your computer, you might not realize that you've introduced a virus until you notice something isn't quite right.

Here are some signs that your system might be infected:

1. Runs consistently more slowly than normal.

2.Stops responding or locks up often.

3. Crashes and restarts every few minutes.

4. Restarts on its own and then fails to run normally.

5. Applications don’t work properly.

6. Disks or disk drives are inaccessible.

7. Printing doesn’t work correctly.

8. You see unusual error messages.

9. You see distorted menus and dialog boxes.

These are common signs of infection, but they could also indicate hardware or software problems that have nothing to do with a virus. The bottom line is that unless you install up-to-date antivirus software on your computer, there is no way to be certain if your computer is infected with a virus or has some other problem. If you don't have current antivirus software installed, or if you're interested in installing a different brand, visit Security software: Downloads and trials for more information.

HELP: Beware of messages warning you that you sent e-mail that contained a virus. This can indicate that the virus has listed your e-mail address as the sender of tainted e-mail. This does not necessarily mean you have a virus. Some viruses have the ability to forge e-mail addresses.

How to avoid getting a virus?

first answer may be antivirus to everyones mind lets see what it actually mean

what is antivirus?

A utility that searches a hard disk for viruses and removes any that are found. Most antivirus programs include an auto-update feature that enables the program to download profiles of new viruses so that it can check for the new viruses as soon as they are discovered.

The best way to avoid getting a computer virus is to verify whether:

1. The suspect files are virus-free. This can be checked by using reputable antivirus software such as AVG antivirus. Further recommendations are available HERE.
2. The email sender is a trusted source who can confirm that they sent you the attachment
3. That the file format is not suspicious- common dangerous files are .exe, .vbs, .scr and .pif files.

What if you believe you already have a virus?

If you believe your computer has already been infected then you can run a online virus check to detect this by clicking HERE and follow the steps in defining the location from which you are currently connecting to the Internet and then accepting the Trend Micro file download and scan.

If you already have antivirus software installed on your system, it's very important to keep it current with the latest updates (called virus definition or virus signature files) that help the tool identify and remove the latest threats. In addition, not all antivirus tools are created equal; if you find that the one you use isn't finding viruses, consider doing some research to find an alternative.
